Strikers History Wall Lewis looks for new Strikers State League 2 South-East side Peninsula Strikers coach Craig Lewis
speaks about opportunity for young players to break through to first-team
ranks at the club. A second-to-none opportunity exists for promising young players to break into senior ranks at State League 2 South-East outfit Peninsula Strikers. New senior coach Craig Lewis is on the lookout for first team players after an inexplicable mass exodus from last year’s playing roster. "The last thing I expected was to start pre-season training with
around 30 players missing from last year Lewis is a leading local football identity and the club hoped that
his reputation and experience He boasts an impressive CV that lists Sunshine George Cross, South
Melbourne, Frankston Strikers, Frankston Pines, Bentleigh Greens Lewis also had a successful stint as player-coach of Pines before leaving to work in Dubai for a few years. Last season he assisted Adam Jamieson at State League 1 South-East runner-up Mornington. Lewis’ support staff are Melbourne Knights goalkeeper of the century Peter Blasby and former English professional Andy Mason, who is a UEFA A Licenced coach. Off the field, the Strikers have come up trumps with last year’s approval of a near million dollar facelift for their Centenary Park headquarters. The design and construction phase of the landmark revamp is expected to amount to around $800,000. Funding also has been secured for the club’s training lights
upgrade, with the federal government providing $108,000, The club also plans to complete a training ground extension this year. A couple of years ago, soil excavated from the nearby Peninsula Link
project provided an extension to the training ground When completed it will provide Strikers with two training grounds and another full-sized pitch. But right now the club is focussed on assembling a first team squad that will be a major improvement on the squads that have struggled to avoid the drop in recent seasons. The Strikers had to win a play-off against Sandringham to maintain
their league status in 2013 and were relegated last year, The first inkling that Lewis had of the recent player exodus was when
he held a pre-christmas meet His response was to contact every one of last year’s players individually. "To be honest I’m not holding my breath about them turning up," Lewis said. "I didn’t get a lot of confidence from the countless calls
I made and I don’t really understand what has got them offside
Lewis has actively pursued players from other clubs and although he says "four or five are keen" they are yet to appear at training. "I spoke to about 20 players and I think most of them are at a stage where they are sitting on the fence and not making commitments to any clubs," he said. "I want the local community to know that we want to push through the best young talent. "We won’t be putting together a squad of 16 players all
under-21 because that’s simply not feasible for what we want to
achieve "I saw Langwarrin’s reserves last year and they were a really good little side with some really good youngsters. "I was speaking to some Langy people the other week and they were telling me that a lot of these boys have gone to Seaford. "Why they would bypass Strikers has got me beat. If you want to play senior football then Centenary Park is the place to play. "That’s the message that we want to get out there loud
and clear."
As a past President and Life Member of the Club I am absolutely delighted
to read the news that one of the most gifted players I for one, will now certainly return to the ground to watch games
on a Saturday again and anticipate that many others will feel the same.
