Round 9, Sunday 23 June 2013 This week, the pitch was adorned with colour co-ordinated players, with both teams playing in navy blue and yellow. It was a brilliant, sunny day and the pitch was dry. When the game started, it was clear that the two teams were relatively evenly matched. By the end of the first half, the score was 1:0 in our favour, but it was in the second half that two goals were scored by Peninsula in the first four minutes that sealed the victory, despite one terrific goal that was simply over Harry Johnstone’s head beyond salvation. Druian Woodward shone in his defence position while George Katergaris made a point of being everywhere he was needed throughout the game. Craig McKinney scored one of his trademark goals from a penalty that flew past the keeper into the bottom right corner. Lewis Walker scored a goal when the Pakenham goal keeper was drawn away from his position. Then Scott McKinney, sporting a new hair style, dominated play once again and was rewarded with the third goal. Matt Syle suffered a knee injury that benched him for the better part of the second half. Not only was he kicked in the knee, but fell heavily on the same leg only a few moments later. Despite the referee having a lousy sense of timing (both halves exceeding 45 minutes), his performance of duties was excellent, as was the standard of play. He acknowledged the great sportsmanship, commenting that for a young team, he considered our boys formidable adversaries. Once again, it was a pleasure to play the game with such amiable and hospitable hosts. It would be remiss not to mention the incredible work of Dave McKinney
for his tireless coaching work. The boys can always count on him for
all the equipment needed to carry out effective training regimes and
for lifts to and from venues. His conduct, sometimes facing abhorrent
behaviour from opposing teams is one of composed leadership that provides
a role model for our young men. He is very generous with his time, sense
of humour (and jelly beans!). It’s about time we made mention
of how much he is appreciated by all who have the pleasure to work with
him. |
