Round 8, Sunday 16 June 2013 Peninsula Strikers welcomed Kevin McCormick back to the fold this week and although he was a little apprehensive about his fitness, he acquitted himself admirably. This also meant that the formidable cheer squad was once again united. What was particularly difficult for spectators was that both teams referred to themselves as Strikers! On another small, heavy pitch, our team was surprised by a goal awarded in the first few minutes despite it being offside which was followed by another two goals; another of which was dubious. It was a good 30 minutes before our team recovered from the early onslaught with a goal by Scott McKinney which kept the score at 3:1 until half time. Just a few minutes into the second half, Anders Jaeger scored and this
seemed to ignite our team, so that the majority of play centred around
our forward line. Several shots at goal were obstructed not only by
the Bunyip keepers, but the cross bar, goal posts and questionable calls
by the referee. While we held Bunyip scoreless in the second half, the
end result did not truly reflect the nature of the game. The loss was
a bitter pill to swallow, but it is always pleasing to play against
affable hosts and Bunyip displayed admirable sportsmanship and hospitality. |
