Round 7, 2 June 2013
1.00 pm
Baxter Park
Peninsula Strikers versus Baxter
Result: 2:0 win to Peninsula Strikers
Goal scorers – Shaquille Alkan and Eddie Tomas

Spectators were treated to a great contest on Sunday when Baxter hosted the game with Peninsula Strikers. At the outset, the size of Baxter players was a little intimidating, especially Baxter’s keeper who was a good foot taller than most of our players and had hands like large dinner plates.

Throughout the game, there were numerous attempts at goal by Baxter that were thwarted by Harry Johnston and it was at the 30 minute mark that Shaq Alkan snaked the ball into the back of the
net after a fumbled save by Baxter’s keeper.
Four minutes into the second half, we watched in amazement as the second goal unfolded before our eyes in slow motion. No-one was more surprised than Eddie Tomas who scored from the edge of the box. It would be remiss not to mention the foiled penalty taken by Aaron Vega. The ribbing of his family and fellow team members will continue to ring in his ears but it was far over-shadowed by his great work as sweeper. Finally, after trialling Lewis Walker in many positions, Coach David McKinney found Lewis’ niche and his game rose to prominence. Tyrone Donnelly, Anders Jaeger and Scott McKinney put in solid performances and Druian Woodward showed his versatility in both the backline and forward positions. It is always difficult to showcase individual players and this game was no exception. The team worked consistently together to bring about a great result.

Baxter is a gracious host and we were lucky to have mostly great weather for the game. This win should lift the spirits of the team for the next contest with Skye on 9 June at Skye Recreational Reserve.
