The rebel forces of Langwarrin Soccer Club made the short trip across the Galaxy, that is Cranbourne Rd, to what used to be the Imperial battle cruiser of soccer on the Peninsula, Frankston Strikers home ground on McClelland Drive. But what ensued there was not an epic battle. This was to be one of the games of the season, the local derby between to close neighbours. But unfortunately for Frankston, that didn’t happen.
Langwarrin dominated from the off, and in the first few minutes were awarded a penalty, when Ben Caffrey was inexplicably felled in the box by the goalkeeper.
Up stepped Ronnie Whitton and clinically dispatched the ball into the back of the net.
From then on, it was all Langwarrin. The hero of last weeks game, Trent fairclough went close a couple of times and Ben also had opportunities to widen the gap but it wasn’t to be. Late in the first half Caffrey went to put pressure on the keeper who then proceeded to elbow Ben in the head. The keeper was shown the red card and resulting penalty was again put away by whitton. In the second half the Strikers looked better and the Langwarrin keeper Jason Dasty was called upon to make a couple of great saves. Although Frankston pressured there was no way past the Langwarrin defence.
Steve Marley was having a solid game at sweeper, and with him and Dasty in charge at the back there was no way through for the marauding Strikers.
Gary Brisbane who’s fitness has been improving every week and who had been having a great game was replaced by Jamie Skelly and RonnieWhitton, who had also been playing well was replaced by Greg Kilner.
The Strikers were beginning to tire, and Langwarrin’s superior fitness and discipline was starting to show. With ten minutes to go Langwarrin caught the Strikers on the break and it was Greg Kilner who put the ball away, leaving the stand-in keeper to pick the ball out of the net. In the last minute of the game, the Strikers keeper, who had done well up to this point, made the fatal error of passing the ball straight to a waiting Ben Caffrey who gratefully accepted the gift and scored with ease. There was not even enough time left to restart the game. All in all a great result for the travelling supporters.
