Langwarrin 5 Frankston Strikers 1

6/7/02

Frankston Strikers made the short trip across Cranbourne Road to Lawton Park on Saturday, to see if the prospect of a local derby may help their plight at the foot of the table. The fact of the matter was, no it would not!
Strikers have struggled all year and Saturday was no exception. In fact it was only due to poor finishing, first by Gary Brisbane from the left, closely followed by Liam Caffrey from the right, that Langwarrin weren’t 2-0 up in the first ten minutes. It took until the thirteen minute mark when the ball was plaid in to Ben Cafrrey just on the edge of the box, he turned and put in a good low hard shot to the near post that forced a good save from Sivuja in the Strikers goal. The corner was put across and head and shoulders above the pack soared Ronnie Whitton to head it home. 1-0 Langy.
Although Langwarrin had control of the game, there was always a chance that they may be made to pay for the earlier missed chances. That was until the 33 minute mark, when Gary Brisbane threw the ball in to Ben Caffrey on the left, Ben beat his marker, got to the by line and put in a good cross to brother Liam who controlled and laid the ball on a plate for, yep, that man again, Mr. Cool, Ronnie Whitton to arrow it home from twenty yards. 2-0. Strikers were still pressing and at the forty minute mark there was a mix up in the Langwarrin box which saw the ball ricochet off Whittons boot, on to the post and according to the referees assistant on the right hand side of the pitch just crossed the line despite Jason Dastys desperate lunge. 2-1.
Half time came and went and I would doubt that Gus MacLeod, the Langwarrin coach, would be singing the praises of his team during the break.
Two minutes in to the second half and things were looking better for Langy. Greg Kilner was put clean through, one on one with the keeper, surely this would be three, Greg shot, the keeper got a boot to it and in swooped Ben Caffrey to drill it into the bottom corner. 3-1. Twelve minutes in to the second half Whitton was replaced by Arial Valdares. At the sixteen minute mark the Strikers had another set back, when their player coach Russell Black was sent off after putting in a very agricultural tackle on Liam Caffrey.
The awesome foursome of Dasty, Marley, Arnauld and Quinn were again proving to be impassable at the back and at this stage were looking cool and in control.
At the twenty seven minute mark Arial Valdares is put through, he unselfishly slots the ball to Greg Kilner who graciously accepts the gift and side foots it in from close range. 4-1 Langy.
At the thirty one minute mark a tired and saw Liam Caffrey was replaced by Simon O’Donnell and two minutes later Chris Quinn was replaced by Marcus Krause.
Five minutes to go and Ben Caffrey broke down the left again leaving defenders in his wake, he whipped in a hard low cross, the ball hit Greg Kilner and some how crossed the line, anyway 5-1 Langy. At the forty minute mark Strikers had a chance to get a consolation goal of their own when they were awarded a penalty. Graham Watson stepped up to salvage some pride for Frankston, but Jason Dasty had other plans. Watson shot, and Dasty, with cat like reflexes got down low to his left to save. The ball broke free, Frankston had another chance but Dasty was equal to it. A fine double save to cap off a comprehensive victory.

Best for Langwarrin: C.Traynor, S. Marley.
